The Test of Three
Sunday, October 19th, 2008In response to last weeks T4D, Kept Free by the Truth, a few of you sent me Socrates “Test of Three” principle, which I had never seen before but love! THANK YOU!
In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, “Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?”
“Wait a moment,” Socrates replied. “Before you tell me I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Test of Three.”
“Test of Three?”
“That’s right,” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my student let’s take a moment to test what you’re going to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”
No,” the man said, “actually I just heard about It.”
“All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?”
“No, on the contrary…”
“So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him even though you’re not certain it’s true?”
The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.
Socrates continued. “You may still pass though, b ecause there is a third test - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?”
“No, not really.”
“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?”
If you didn’t read last weeks T4D Kept Free by the Truth I have included it below.
…. and the truth shall set you free”. Â
My wife Rebecca was asked to teach a class on honesty and used a cool quote that I will share later… but the source of her  quote led me to do more reading and to this conclusion. The truth may indeed set us free… but it more accurately keeps us from being trapped in the first place. There is power in truth…and the scarcity of it in our lives today makes it an ever more rare and valuable treasure.
If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it. Â - Marcus Aurelius
It is a greater compliment to be trusted than to be loved. Â - George Macdonald If any man seeks for greatness, let him forget greatness and ask for truth, and he will find both. Â - Horace Mann
Truth often suffers more by the heat of its defenders than from the arguments of its opposers. Â - William Penn
Tell the truth. Live the truth. Live so that you don’t have to remember what you said.  - Richard L. Evans
People cannot change truth, but truth can change people. Â - Unknown
