The Most Expensive One Is…

”Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”  — Albert Einstein
“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”  — Mark Twain
http://www.dictionary.com/ shows this as the leading definition for the word education.  :the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.
Today while speaking at K-State or Kansas State University another speaker quoting a definition of education that predates Webster’s and the existence of the US said that Education or “educara’ actually meant “to lead out”Â
What a great definition especially when you believe that leaders, all leaders have a responsibility to educate, to lead out, and lead up. As you read the 2 quotes below look how seamlessly you can swap the word leader for the word teacher in each of them.
“The best teacher is the one who suggests rather than dogmatizes, and inspires his listener with the wish to teach himself.”
– Edward Bulwer-Lytton
“A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary.”
– Thomas Carruthers
Are you unnecessary yet?Â

I’m attributing today’s T4D to my wife Rebecca who modified it from it’s original form to make it not just her own…but also a part of our family culture.
The key to a happy life is an eagerness to learn and a willingness to change. ~ Rebecca Weisler

“Education would be so much more effective if its purpose were to ensure that by the time they leave school every boy and girl should know how much they don’t know, and be imbued with a lifelong desire to know it.”
– Sir William Haley
“I am beginning to suspect all elaborate and special systems of education. They seem to me to be built up on the supposition that every child is a kind of idiot who must be taught to think.”
– Anne Sullivan
“Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”

Read this in Duane’s e-mail signature block. Â Since I believe in being positively contagious…I loved it!Â
A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive outcomes. It is a catalyst…a spark that creates extraordinary results. ~ Duane Dunn

Courage is the greatest of all the virtues. Because if you haven’t courage, you may not have an opportunity to use any of the others. — Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English Author

Dang - these guys figured this stuff out years and years ago!
Dream, Believe, Dare, DO!! This was Walt Disney’s Motto - interesting how the four previous quotes fit that same pattern isn’t it?  One of my mentors and dear friend Art Coombs is a big Walt Disney fan…the book on his shelf about Walt was called, “The Disney Way”. An excellent read!

My daughter Brittany sent me the following piece on an American Icon whose time is up. It’s cute, she’s my daughter, it made me smile. I know it will be a bit too “cutesy” for a few of you…so I invite you to skip it and consider the 4 “timely” quotes above the T4D - and consider what follows as a funny and punny bonus.
The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community.
Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, The California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described him as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers.
He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times and a crusty old man he was still considered a positive roll model for millions.
He is survived by his wife Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

Be Polite but Say NO to Life SuckersÂ
”Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life is made of.”
– Benjamin Franklin
“Learn to say no to people that are wasting your time. Be polite, but say no. You have your goals, your commitments, and you still take time to be helpful, however everyone has their limits. Learn to say no to those things that are clearly out of your area: you will save time for yourself and you will let the person asking for your help move on to someone that can really help them. Time is all you have, so learn to guard it carefully and of course use it wisely. Say no to people and things when you need to.” — Edward W. Smith
My wife Rebecca and I have been working on politely saying no for a couple years now - I think we’re starting to get pretty good at it - and I must say, it makes a very real difference. Some people are “time bandits” and will suck your life away driveling on about stuff that is even less memorable than what was on television last night.  The trick is to be polite, balancing patience, principle with practice.  Soon you’ll be able to politely excuse yourself from the circles of life sucking time bandits. Hey they’re stealing your life!
There are also many things that, like people, suck away our precious time. Â Time is the stuff that life is made of…so don’t let people and less important stuff suck away a few years you might have better spent growing closer to the most important people in your life, or just growing period. Â
When so many around us seem to be racing frantically as they are trying to do everything, be everywhere - some even seem to have the idea that a busy life equals a meaningful and important life. Well it doesn’t.
I was dismayed to hear the spouse of one of our favored current presidential political candidates say, that she prided herself on “Being home in time to tuck the kids into bed.” In time to tuck them in Bed?!  Wow, now there is some quality time!! What about the rest of their day? And the rest of their lives?
Saying no to lesser things allows time to say yes to the more important things.Â
Say No - So you can say YES
